A Practice of Technique
Artist Statement
Linealism
Artist Statement
I am a 3rd
generation Artist who found my calling when as a youth I found a lot
of trouble leading to summer programs to keep me busy. These
programs always involved art. From there it was always art, Finding
my favorite artist, style, and purpose.
Fast forward many years I found myself in NYC selling art out
of restaurants. This is when I really started to develop my style as
I now call it “Linealism”. After many years I returned home
Annapolis MD outside of D.C. to a big welcome and a economic boom. I
kept myself very busy with commissions putting paintings in homes
and businesses. Now in Miami I have a studio in the Bake house Art
Complex located in Wynwood (the Art district) still exploring my
technique and unique style of painting.
Approaching a painting with intent of a technique has made me very
confident in choices and execution. For my lines I use all sorts of
objects around the studio but mainly use used cardboard, cereal
boxes, computer boxes, shipping boxes, anything.
Focusing on technique has unlimited subject matter and the
challenge is moving forward in an artistic pursuit.
Which is when I am most pleased when a piece has taken an
evolution? Knowing how
long a painting takes to make is hard to calculate, I paint the
background first then let the painting hang around the studio till
an idea comes into my head or the image comes through on the canvas.
While working I get a sense of urgency of getting the piece done
before the momentum is lost or I move on to another project.
Recognizing when a piece is
finished is when the balance and composition are complete with no
voids.
Using the lines and keeping it simple.
Building the image with lines is similar to an image on the
computer and how there are made of 0’s and 1’s, as a television
displays an image with pixels. My style started as minimalism and
with each painting the images started to form. As if organically
fish and flowers started to come through the paintings which
developed into animals and people. I am now working on mixed media
projects and installations. Linealism is now a licensed trademarked
and will be seen on clothing in the near future.
Artist Bio
Tupper has spent his life so far on the east coast of America. He was born in Annapolis MD attended the American Institute of Art in D.C. during and After High School. Then joined the Army during the Gulf War serving three years in Germany. Upon returning to the U.S. Tupper returns to College Studying Architecture for three years. Then leaving College to study Lithography printing in Washington D.C. Using his career in Lithography Tupper moves to NYC's east village and runs a press in Hoboken N.J. At this time Tupper returns to his painting. Living in the village and working in Hoboken was not enough of NYC living. So looking for other work in the city Tupper eventually found himself head bartender at Studio 54 in Times Square. Staying at the studio till after the millennium, only to work across the street at an Irish pub that allows Tupper to hang his Art work and rotate them. After two years there Tupper was lured to a Hells Kitchen Bar named Otis where there was more exposure and wall space for his Art. The Art really started to move at this point as well as finding a partner starting a real estate company. After selling a building and a floor of a building Tupper planned on a 6 mo. break in his hometown of Annapolis, which turned into three years of successful shows and commissions. During this time Tupper's father invited him to help build a mall in Coral Gables FL. S since 2007 Tupper has been in living in the Design District having the occasional show and being a project manager of the rebuild of the Miracle marketplace.
